REAL-TIME PROCESSING
There’s this girl who’s older than me by 10 years and she’s adopted but when she was 18 she didn’t know that and thought my mom was her biological mom and my mom was angry at her because it was inconvenient to bring her to a Cambridge center to ask about whether she can go to college cuz she needed minimum 3 credits for college and she didn’t have them cuz she apparently joined a bad influence group and didn’t take studying seriously and in the car when I was 8 and she was 18 my mom threw this you know the large metal bars that are thick and heavy and VERY MUCH METALLIC that ppl use to lock their steering wheel yeah she threw it at her and I mean I was 8 what do I do. And then when I call her out on ONE SMALL THING like “oh remember you threw away that dress my dad bought me cuz you were mad” and she went “why do you only remember all the bad things? I do so many good things for you!” No the food thing is just one thing. She doesn’t actually want me out of my room she just wants ppl to stop judging her for having a defective kid ——
I’m reading through her messages w my mh clinic and there’s apparently been sessions where my mom has met w my therapist online multiple times and my therapist only told me she called one time.
I can’t see what they discussed…cuz they had online meetings?? There was one where the mh clinic sent this…I checked with my timeline and it was after a session where I shared something oh wait I think it was the session where I shared a paper with suicidal shit on it: Hi, do you have any availability on Wednesday?
[clinical psychologist] would like to schedule an online appointment to discuss your about [me]. He does not charge any fees for this appointment. 5:21 PM Please let me know what time you are available for this appointment, ta
I didn’t know all this was happening wtf I literally. Like that time where he said “so your mom called and…” I asked “does this happen often?” And he said no it was the first time. IT WAS IN FACT NOT THE FIRST TIME

[mom]: Subject: Request for Psychological Assessment and Support Letter for My Daughter
Dear [psychiatrist],
I am writing to request a psychological evaluation for my daughter, [me], age 16, who is currently a Year 11 student at [my school]. She is preparing for her IGCSE examinations this year.
[me] is a highly intelligent and sensitive student who has consistently performed well academically. However, she has been facing challenges with time management, emotional regulation, and social withdrawal. Specific behaviors include:
• Chronic lateness to school, often due to morning procrastination
• Difficulty handling criticism or pressure
• Strong perfectionist tendencies (deep emotional reactions to small grade differences)
• Anxiety around social interaction, hygiene, and changes in routine
• Sudden emotional outbursts at school when overwhelmed
These issues became more pronounced after the COVID-19 pandemic and seem to be affecting her daily functioning. The school has recently issued disciplinary action due to repeated lateness, including a two-week suspension. In response, the school has requested a formal letter or diagnosis from a certified mental health professional to support a more understanding approach toward her behavior, particularly regarding punctuality and academic stress.
I would greatly appreciate your help in assessing [me]'s emotional and psychological well-being, and—if appropriate—providing a written statement or medical note that could help us collaborate with the school on a better support plan for her.
Please let me know what documents or background you may require, and I would be happy to provide them.
Thank you so much for your time and support.
Sincerely,
[mom] (Mother of [me])

[mom]: Suspension or expulsion for issues like tardiness or frequent lateness to school is counterproductive and fails to address the core issue. Research consistently shows that punitive measures like suspension often exacerbate the underlying problem, rather than resolve it. According to a 2021 study by the American Psychological Association, students who are suspended or expelled are more likely to fall behind academically, experience further disengagement from school, and ultimately drop out at higher rates. In fact, National Center for Education Statistics reports that students who are frequently suspended are more likely to experience long-term negative outcomes, including increased school absenteeism, behavior issues, and even involvement in the criminal justice system.
Instead of suspending students for punctuality issues, a more effective approach would be implementing intervention strategies like mentoring, time management workshops, and positive reinforcement. These alternatives have been shown to increase student engagement, improve attendance, and foster a more positive school culture. The use of restorative practices, for example, which focus on dialogue and understanding, is already being implemented in districts across the U.S. with great success. For instance, the Chicago Public Schools system has shifted from traditional suspensions to restorative justice practices, seeing a marked decline in suspensions and improved student outcomes.
As educational professionals, we must prioritize solutions that genuinely support students' growth and development. Schools exist not only to impart knowledge but to guide young people toward becoming responsible, empathetic, and engaged individuals. In fact, The National Education Association (NEA) has consistently advocated against excessive suspensions for non-violent offenses, including punctuality, arguing that such measures undermine the educational mission of schools.
Furthermore, experts like Dr. Daniel Losen from the Civil Rights Project at UCLA highlight how school suspensions disproportionately affect minority and low-income students, further exacerbating existing inequities in education. In 2016, the U.S. Department of Education found that Black students, boys, and students with disabilities are more likely to be suspended for non-violent infractions, including tardiness, than their peers. This creates a cycle of disadvantage that is both educationally and socially harmful. Schools should aim to be inclusive spaces that offer fair and supportive interventions, not punitive environments that push vulnerable students further away from success.
Imagine a student, already struggling with personal challenges—whether at home, with mental health, or socially—whose late arrival to school results in suspension or expulsion. This punishment only compounds their feelings of isolation, frustration, and failure. Instead of offering support, we are telling them that their mistakes are irredeemable. For many students, the reason for tardiness may be out of their control. Perhaps they are dealing with family responsibilities, transportation issues, or anxiety that makes getting to school on time difficult. For these students, punishment doesn't solve the problem; it deepens the sense of alienation.
Let's consider a real-life example: The Los Angeles Unified School District once introduced an initiative called "Late Start," where students who were tardy received restorative interventions instead of punishment. This approach acknowledged that tardiness is often symptomatic of deeper issues. The result was a dramatic improvement in student engagement, a decrease in tardiness, and stronger relationships between students and staff. This approach doesn't only benefit the students who struggle with punctuality, but creates an overall environment of care and support, fostering empathy and responsibility within the entire school community.
Punitive measures like suspension don't encourage the student to address the underlying reasons for their tardiness. Instead, they send the message that mistakes lead to punishment, rather than growth and learning. By creating systems of support and understanding, we can inspire students to develop the skills they need to manage their time effectively and engage with their schoolwork in meaningful ways.
In conclusion, rather than continuing the practice of suspending or expelling students for punctuality issues, we must adopt more progressive, supportive methods of intervention. By implementing programs that address the root causes of tardiness—such as mentorship, time management training, and restorative justice—we can support our students in overcoming obstacles and create a more inclusive, equitable, and effective educational environment.
[mom]: Dear [psychiatrist], Thank you for seeing my daughter earlier. I understand and respect your professional judgment regarding the need for further observation before any formal diagnosis or report can be made. However, I kindly ask if you could write a brief letter to confirm that: 1. You have seen my daughter for a consultation. 2. Based on your initial assessment, she may be facing some emotional stress or adjustment difficulties. 3. In your opinion, it would be beneficial for the school to provide her with support and not add further pressure during this period. This is not for a formal diagnosis—just a note to help the school understand her current state and reconsider a suspension that may affect her mental well-being and IGCSE preparation. I really appreciate your help and understanding. Warm regards, [me] Mom
[mom]: Hi [psychiatrist], good morning. Thank you again for seeing my daughter, [me], yesterday. I just wanted to gently follow up on the support letter we discussed. The school is waiting for it to help make further decisions. I understand you may be busy, and I really appreciate your help. Please let me know if you need anything from me. Thank you again. Warm regards, [mom]

[mom]: Subject: A Gentle Check-In About My Daughter
Dear [clinical psychologist],
Hope you are well. I understand that many things discussed between you and my daughter are private and confidential, and I truly respect that.
She is a sensitive and thoughtful child, and I know she values her space and independence. I'm only writing this email as a gentle check-in — if there is anything I, as her mother, can do to support her process, please feel free to let me know. I won't ask for details, but just a simple "she's okay" or "she needs a little more space" is enough to give me some peace of mind.
I truly believe she's strong and brilliant, and I can see she's already trying her best to grow and change. I will do my best to cooperate with your guidance and not interfere with her healing journey. Warmly [mom] ([me] Khoo Mom)

[mom]: Dear [clinical psychologist],
I hope you're well. This is [mom] — [me]'s mother. Thank you again for all the care and support you've provided to her.
I would like to kindly request your help in writing a brief letter to her school, explaining that [me] experiences significant emotional distress and anxiety before exams, and recommending that she be allowed to stay home in the mornings and arrive shortly before her scheduled afternoon exams.
At the same time, I would like to respectfully request that:
• You do not include or attach her full psychological or medical report;
• The letter be simple and general, just confirming that she is under your care and would benefit from this arrangement;
• This is to protect her privacy and dignity — she is not aware that I've submitted any documentation to the school, as I want to help her build resilience without feeling labeled or different.
If possible, I'd be grateful to receive the letter via email or I can collect it from your clinic.
Thank you so much again for your support and understanding.
Warm regards, [mom]

[mom]: [person who works at mh clinic] can you help?
[mom]: Send to [clinical psychologist]
